There is an ongoing race of constructions in the world. Skyscrapers, spires, towers, and other vertical structures are reaching ever higher and higher. And, to be honest, this is often done merely to satisfy the vanity of the builders. However, sometimes height serves a practical purpose, and lighthouses are just such a case. Our TOP of the world’s tallest lighthouses will show where the most majestic “sanctuaries of the seas” are located.
1 Jeddah Light – 133 meters
The Jeddah Light is located in Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea coast. The lighthouse was built relatively recently, in 1990. The structure was initially constructed as a control tower and later adopted additional signaling functions.
2 Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial – 107 meters
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, built in 1915 to commemorate the Battle of Lake Erie against British forces, is the second tallest lighthouse in the world that … is not a lighthouse. It is primarily a memorial, with lights installed just to make it more useful.
3 Marine Tower – 101 meters
As is often the case in Japan, Marine Tower is not only a lighthouse but also a beautiful spot and a tourist attraction in Yokohama. At a height of 100 meters, there’s an observation deck from which, on a clear day, you can see the famous Mount Fuji. Marine Tower was built in 1961.
4 Île Vierge – 82.5 meters
Île Vierge in France was completed in 1902 using traditional stone-building techniques. In addition to being ranked 4th among the world’s tallest lighthouses, it is the tallest traditional lighthouse and the tallest in Europe.
5 La Lanterna – 77 meters
La Lanterna, located in the port of Genoa, is an ancient structure built in 1543. It has been renovated multiple times, with its latest restoration taking place in 1956. It is such a significant landmark for Genoa that it has become one of the symbols of the city.
6 Gatteville Lighthouse – 75 meters
The third tallest lighthouse in Europe is located in Gatteville-le-Phare, France. Completed in 1835, this lighthouse is still operational but also open to the public, who must climb over 350 steps to reach the top.
7 Lesnoy Mole Rear Range Light – 73 meters
The Lesnoy Mole Rear Range Light, located in Saint Petersburg, is the tallest lighthouse in Russia and simultaneously the tallest range (paired) lighthouse in the world. Its construction is unique, being made of metal. Interestingly, its “partners,” the Front and Middle range lights of Lesnoy Mole, are three and four times shorter.
8 Mulantou Lighthouse – 72 meters
The tallest lighthouse in China is located in Hainan and, due to the landscape, rises 97.2 meters above sea level. The structure was built in 1995.
9 Baishamen Lighthouse – 72 meters
Baishamen Lighthouse is also located in Hainan, and although it is lower than Mulantou, it rivals its taller counterpart in beauty.
10 Storozhenskiy Lighthouse – 71 meters
One of the most beautiful old stone lighthouses in Russia, built in 1907, is located on the shores of Lake Ladoga near the village of Storozhno. The lighthouse’s unofficial name is “Seventh Heaven,” with nearly 400 steps leading to the top platform.
